General Public Access - Psychiatric Service Animal (PSA) Recommendation Letter (v2)
Our psychiatric service animal (PSA) General Public Access recommendation letter from our licensed therapist is the strongest supporting document to help eliminate hassles from the uninformed public.
To take your dog to businesses/public entities (including restaurants, stores, hotels, and parks) your dog must be classified as a service dog.
Someone has a SERVICE DOG if they have a physical or mental/emotional disability, and their dog has been trained to assist them with their disability. Anyone including themselves can train the dog. There is no training certification required by law.
A service dog is generally allowed to go anywhere the public is allowed. A representative of a business or public place can legally only ask you 2 questions: 1) Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? 2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
Please note a Psychiatric Service Animal (PSA) is simply a service dog for a person with a psychiatric impairment, like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, panic attacks, OCD, bipolar disorder, etc…). These dogs are individually trained to mitigate their handler's psychiatric disability. Their function is not to provide emotional support but to perform tasks that enable their partner to function in ordinary ways the non-disabled take for granted.
If your dog has been specifically trained (can be trained by anyone) to assist you with your emotional/mental disability, then you’d likely have a psychiatric service animal (PSA). PSA’s are a type of service animal and do have public access rights. Our licensed medical therapists will evaluate your condition and upon approval provide you with a psychiatric service animal (PSA) recommendation letter.
